Our regular look at GIBS news, events and guests

“It’s part of our geography, we are in the financial capital of Africa. The largest and most sophisticated banks in Africa are within a five-kilometre radius of GIBS. It’s a no-brainer for us to seek to be connected to an important industry in society.”

So said GIBS Dean Professor Morris Mthombeni when asked why the business school hosted a conference like Beyond Banking 2024 in conjunction with management consulting firm Monocle.

“We are trying to communicate that we have an interest in this sector and expertise in this sector,” Prof. Mthombeni continued. “We want to amplify and build on the existing strengths that already exist in the sector.”

Referring to the relationship with Monocle, Mthombeni said it was a true partnership and not a funding relationship. “We come together, we conceive the idea together, we think about who the speakers should be together, and we think about how to keep the conversation going between the conferences.”

No surprise, then, that the conference’s keynote address was delivered by one of GIBS’ most distinguished alumni, Coen Jonker, CEO of TymeBank and TymeGlobal, the multi-country digital banking group focused on emerging markets in Asia and Africa. Jonker was one of GIBS first MBA graduates, cum laude, in 2001.
