“I’m absolutely convinced that we are at a global inflection point in human history,” said Professor Ian Goldin, professor of globalisation and development at Oxford University and a former chief executive of the Development Bank of Southern Africa and an advisor to Nelson Mandela. He was in virtual conversation at GIBS with the former finance minister, Trevor Manuel, to launch his new book in South Africa, Rescue: From Global Crisis to a Better World. Goldin’s premise is that the Covid-19 pandemic has compressed into a year the trends that would otherwise have taken decades to emerge, and “by seizing this historic moment, we can turn the tide to shape our individual and collective destiny…rescue humanity from catastrophe and create a better world.”
