Visitors to the Illovo campus would have noticed a major marketing drive aimed at drawing attention to GIBS expertise in the field of coaching.

Alison Reid, Director: Personal and Applied Learning at GIBS, explains: “GIBS goes beyond teaching and research to place the human being at the centre of learning and leading. Great teaching and research are critical in a world-class business school education.

"Meaning and application of that teaching and research, however, happens in the minds of the individual learner. GIBS believes that, through individual learner-centric approaches like coaching, knowledge comes alive and has impact. Certainly, research indicates there is an 80% improvement in impact if coaching and teaching are combined in relevant ways in management development.

“The Personal and Applied Learning Centre at GIBS was created to deliver on the business school’s personal learning approaches, like coaching. The centre looks after approximately 100 part-time faculty, including some of South Africa’s best master coaches. It delivers thought leadership in areas like coaching and supports the embedding of coaching on programmes across the school.

“Coaching is designed to optimise personal capabilities like the capacity to adapt amidst change and the capacity to sense make amidst uncertainty. Coaching@GIBS provides deeply personalised learning through facilitated thinking spaces that drive both performance and more widespread positive impact for individuals’ lives,” says Reid.
